What is adjournment in contemplation of dismissal?

An adjournment in contemplation of dismissal, called an ACD, is an order by a judge to adjourn, or suspend, a misdemeanor case for a period of six months, or if a case involves marijuana, a sentence may depend on the amount involved and the circumstances of the case. Effective March 31, 2021, it is no longer a crime to smoke or possess limited amounts of cannabis in New York.
