What are some of the methods used by identity thieves to obtain private information?

Identity thieves can use a number of different methods to obtain your private information. One way is dumpster diving, in which they go through trash in search of credit card bills, bank statements, health insurance and financial forms from past years, such as prior years’ tax returns.

Another means by which identity thieves acquire your personal information is by stealing your mail. They may target someone and steal mail directly from their mailbox. The identity thieves are on a quest for bank statements, credit card bills, tax information, medical information and personal checks.

In addition, identity thieves can steal your wallet or purse, which contains a driver’s license, credit cards, debit cards or bank deposit slips. Moreover, they may use the appeal of prize winnings to entice you to provide your personal and credit card information via phone or email.
