East End DWI Task Force Defense

Drivers on the East End, from the North Fork through Southampton, East Hampton and Montauk should be aware that a task force targeting drunken drivers began in 2012. Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota joined officials from Suffolk County police, New York State police and 10 East End police departments Wednesday to announce the creation of the East End DWI Task Force.

The team allows officers to work together outside jurisdictional boundaries to stop drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The five townships on the East End — Riverhead, Southold, Shelter Island, East Hampton and Southampton — will all be focusing on DWI with more manpower and coordination.

DWI checkpoints are to be set up throughout the East End.

Dubbed Operation NiteCAP, the task force will “employ a team approach”, putting 17 additional patrol cars on the roads, as well as the “BAT Mobile,” a mobile unit that allows officers to administer breath alcohol testing on the spot and process and hold up to four arrested defendants at a time.

The district attorney’s office stated that the total number of DWI arrests processed in East End town and justice courts averaged 1,100 to 1,200 cases a per year from 2009 to 2011.
