Suspect extradited from Pennsylvania to New York for ex-wife’s machete murder

A 63-year-old man was arrested in connection with the murder of his ex-wife in the Bronx. He was accused of running over her with her own vehicle and fatally stabbing her with a machete.

Police arrived at the scene in response to a 911 call. They found Noelia Mateo, 58, unconscious outside her Bronx home with severe injuries to her body. The NYPD believed the woman’s ex-husband Victor Mateo ran over her with her vehicle multiple times. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Witnesses said Victor allegedly attacked Noelia with a machete as she tried to get away. She was repeatedly stabbed and beaten with the machete in front of her two grandchildren, ages 9 and 11. Victor then allegedly fled the scene in her vehicle.

Authorities arrested Victor in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, after a weeklong manhunt. They located him there after learning that he owned properties in the city and had family there.

Victor was then extradited to New York City. He was charged with first-degree manslaughter, second-degree murder, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and three counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The process of extradition ensures a suspect will not be able to legally evade arrest by fleeing to another state. Under interstate extradition law, one state is allowed to surrender a suspected or convicted criminal to another state for trial or punishment. In this case, it involved transporting Victor from Pennsylvania to New York where he was charged with multiple criminal offenses.
