The former CEO and chairman of NASCAR was arrested on Long Island, New York, for aggravated driving while intoxicated (DWI). He was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and go through alcohol counseling before his sentencing in June 2020.

Brian France, 56, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DWI in August 2018. If he successfully fulfills the terms of his plea agreement, the charge will be reduced to a traffic violation of driving while impaired.

France agreed to follow the court’s recommendations. He released a statement saying that the arrest gave him “the opportunity to reflect” and taught him “valuable lessons” that will allow him to “be a better person.”

Police said France was driving a 2017 Lexus in the Hamptons when he ran a stop sign. He was arrested at a traffic stop after his blood alcohol concentration registered at 0.18 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit.

Following his arrest, France announced he was stepping down as NASCAR chairman and CEO after having held the positions for almost 15 years. His uncle, Jim France, replaced him.
