It's important in those situations to have an attorney who represents your interests and not the interests of the employer or the interests of the union or the union leadership in your corner. Because often the attorneys or representatives who are hired by the unions are more interested in currying favor with union leadership or the employer than with making sure that your interests are taken to heart. 

Often it's better to have attorney on your side that is an attorney who is not directly involved in the process.
